Sam's Baptism

Pastor Schnake visited us at the hospital on Wednesday (2/22) and baptized Samuel. It was really nice to have a personal baptism for Sam with just the four of us in the room. Pastor read parts of Psalm 139 and John 3 and then baptized Sam. Sam slept through the entire occasion.

Sam will also have a dedication at church on March 11th, when his Aunties Pril and Kriste are there to be recognized as his God parents and we can introduce him to our church family.

Samuel (formerly known as Baby P) made his way into our world on Monday afternoon at 2:30pm. He was delivered by surprise C-section, which was kind of scary, but he did great and so did his mama. He weighed in at 8 pounds and 15 ounces and was 22 inches long - - a big boy! We are just loving him up and enjoying our time getting to know this new little peanut. Welcome to our family, Sam!

Date Nights

We decided that we needed to implement monthly date nights. For our January date, we divided the fun into two nights. We had some yummy Red Robin on a Friday night and went to a movie the next night. It was probably a good idea, since I seem to have trouble staying awake much past 9pm. Both nights were lots of fun.

Taking a photo of ourselves proved to be difficult. This was the best one we got. :)

Newborn Cloth Diapers

Bummis Tini Fit All In One Diaper

All of the diapers that I have purchased and registered for are labeled as "One Size" - which means that they have multiple snaps or other ways to change the sizing so that they should fit a baby from approximately 7 or 8 pounds through potty training.

I doubt that Baby P. will be much (if any) smaller than 7-8 lbs, so it seems like he should fit into One Size diapers from the get-go.

But, I have learned, via the wonderful world of the internet, that very few newborns fit into One Size diapers - even if they weigh 8 or 9 pounds. They are just too skinny and those diapers really start fitting best closer to 10-12 pounds.

So, I started researching newborn cloth diapers. There were a few good deals to be found via Ebay, etc. but knowing that I would need lots of them, still made the cost prohibitive. Especially considering that I don't know how long our little guy will even be wearing them.

Thankfully, somewhere in my researching frenzy, I learned that there are multitudes of places from which you can rent newborn cloth diapers. Woot!

I compared and contrasted all of the varying diaper types, deposit fees, etc. at LOTS of places and then, serendipitously happened upon the website for Top to Bottom Baby Boutique. Not only do they offer a newborn cloth diaper rental package at a fair price, they are located just up the road in Omaha. Double woot!

So, come sometime next February, you can expect to find Baby P. (who will hopefully have a better name by that point) sporting the Bummis Tini Fit diapers on loan from Top to Bottom. Yay!

Thanks to Brian's online Black Friday shopping, we now have a ginormous TV and a blu-ray player. They will reside in the basement, once it is done, but for now they have found a home in the living room. I think it might be time to go shopping for a TV stand, too. :)

Third Trimester

Last Sunday marked 28 weeks and the beginning of the third trimester. I am still feeling really well...although I seemed to get tired out a bit easier than I used to. We have made a lot of progress in Baby's room this past week...clearing out everything that doesn't belong in there and purchasing a crib. Brian has his work cut out for him this weekend - time to put together the crib and a bookcase! :)

Every time that we take Mabel to the farm, she seems to have some sort of wild adventure. This time (last weekend) was no exception. She went for a swim in a hog manure pit!

We don't know for sure, but we think she fell in. Guesses are based on the fact that she does not like to swim, it was dark outside and she has never done this before.

She stunk to high heaven.

We gave her a bath. The next morning, we took her to Grand Island and the people at the vet clinic gave her three more regular baths plus the skunk deodorizing treatment. She still stunk, although things were much improved. The smell seems to be slowly wearing off. Thank goodness!

Psycho Path

Last night, we re-lived our third date by making a visit to the Roca Berry Farm.

On Thursday through Sunday evenings, in the month of October, the farm is open past dark and becomes....the Roca Scary Farm.

Our friends Dustin and Jen went with us and we had a great time touring the Psycho Path, the Haunted Mansion and going on a Haunted Hayrack Ride. We also shared a funnel cake, which was so yummy!

It was all fun, but the Psycho Path was definitely the best part and the part with the clowns and the strobe lights was the scariest....although, the zombie dude that followed us for a while also freaked me out.

If anyone is for some scary times, it will be open for the next three nights. We recommend!

Anniversary

Our dating/engagement anniversary dinner wasn't quite as fancy as last year's. It was really nice to just stay home for a night, though, and we lucked out with a beautiful night to eat on the deck. I added a little candle for ambiance and Mabel really added to that by barking through our entire meal, as she hoped that we would share our grub.

Here is the diaper loot that we picked up at the Circle Me Rediaper Consignment Sale, today. Most of these cloth diapers would cost $15-$20 each if we bought them new. Instead, we got them each for $5-$8! Score!

These are all "pocket" diapers - meaning that there is an opening in the lining to insert an extra absorbent layer (or two) of fabric. Besides the diapers, we picked up a pretty good sized stack of inserts.

Another nice feature of these diapers is that they are all "one size" diapers. You can use the various snaps to make them bigger or smaller, so that they should fit the baby from his or her first days until they are ready to potty train.

Ideally, we would like to have somewhere between 20 and 30 diapers. So, we are off to a great start. :)

Little Wooden Trees

Brian came to bed about an hour after I did, last night. I think I half woke-up to tell him good night.

About 5 minutes later, I thought it was morning and that we needed to wake up. It was about 10:30pm - so....not time to wake up.

My dresser is right beside my side of the bed and I always keep my phone (which serves as my alarm clock) and my glasses on the edge of it, so I can reach up to see what time it is, etc.

When I thought it was time to wake up, I reached up there and felt all around for my little wooden tree. For some reason, I thought that Brian and I each had a little wooden tree on our respective sides of the bed and that you somehow used them to help wake up.

The ones in my head were about a foot tall.

So, I was reaching around and half sitting up and feeling all over the edge of the dresser, but just couldn't find my little wooden tree. Brian, unsurprisingly, asked me what I was doing. I told him that I couldn't find my little wooden tree and I needed help.

He had no idea what was going on and said something to that effect. I started to get really mad at him for not understanding and also for not helping me.

Finally, I convinced him to turn on the bedside light that is on his side of the bed. He turned it on and again asked what was going on. I told him I needed help finding my little wooden tree. He told me we didn't have a little wooden tree and that pissed me off because I knew we didn't have a wooden tree...I was pretty sure that we had two - one for each of us. I think I gave him the look of death.

He asked why we had these trees and I said "To help us wake up!" Duh.

Somehow, he convinced me to look at his bedside table and see that there was no wooden tree. I looked. No wooden trees were anywhere to be seen.

And the reality of us not owning any little wooden trees somehow woke me up.

All of a sudden I was (mostly) awake and realized that I had just been talking and thinking nonsense. I busted out laughing and then had a really hard time falling back to sleep because I couldn't quit laughing.

It didn't help that Brian kept asking me why I thought little wooden trees would help us wake up and I had no idea. I would bust our laughing every time he asked.

If you think that I need to go to the loony bin, I concur. It was weird. I don't think that I've ever had an experience like that before.

It seems that I am in a learning mood. I just signed myself up for an online photography class. This has been on my "to do" list for a long time and is part of my current 101 goals list.

I will be taking this class from Nicole of "Nicole's Classes" in October. With Baby P. on his or her way, I figured it was high time that I figure out how to really use my camera.

I used to know how to make granny squares. Then, I didn't make them for a really long time. Now, I don't remember how to do it. I still know how to do all of the individual stitches required to make a granny square, so I could probably figure out how to do it by reading some tutorials on the internet.

But, that wouldn't be nearly as much fun as taking a class that specifically teaches how to make these pretty, multi-colored granny squares with my sister.

So, I'm going for the more fun option and I am way excited about it.

brooke and I were fortunate enough to visit the Nelson Atkins Art Museum a couple of weeks ago when we went to Kansas City for brooke's craft fair that she attended. The museum was really awesome. Brian found some really great Ancient and 18th century art and brooke found some great modern and contemporary art. So it was fun for both of us. Tomorrow you will get the pleasure of seeing what brooke liked at the Nelson Atkins Museum. (I know, you can't wait)

Trapped in a Plastic Bubble - Please help!!

These two don't seem the slightest bit concerned that they are trapped in a bubble of plastic. However, those smiles turned upside down quickly when they realized they were trapped. We have alerted the authorities about this ordeal, and were told that it would cost hundreds of dollars to extract them. Please send what you can. A little bit can go a long ways towards freeing them, and making them smile again.

FYI: This is what happens to your peanut butter jar if you let a 30lb Mabel have at it. Notice the cleanliness of the jar. Too bad she had to rip open the bottom; we could have re-used the jar for something else. :)

I gave this to her and she tried to take it out her doggy door, but she couldn't go out the door with the jar in her mouth. She tried for about 3-4 minutes to get the jar out of the door. I then tried to take it from her and throw the jar out back, but she wouldn't have any of that, (she knows how many countless little buggers I pull from her mouth on our walks and DON'T give them back). So I had to let her out of her kennel and lead her around towards the backyard. Then she was able to feast upon the PB.

Making Yogurt

I have been intrigued with the idea of making my own yogurt for a couple of years. I added it to my current goal list, so I would have a bigger incentive to actually do it.

About a month ago, Trent of The Simple Dollar (one of my all-time favorite blogs) wrote a post about making yogurt in the crock pot. This seemed a lot simpler than the other methods I had read about, so I decided to give it a go.

We are now on our fourth batch and it is wonderful! ...easy, yummy, and significantly cheaper than buying yogurt at the store - which is good because we eat a lot of yogurt.

If you are intrigued, I encourage you to give it a try.

We had another sleepover with Mabel last night. We put the air mattress out on the deck and enjoyed the beautiful summer night. She is a good little snuggler and cracks us up as she burrows under the covers to sleep.

Summer Is Here!

To celebrate the first day of Brian's summer vacation, we hit up Bridesmaid's at the movie theater, the used book store, Yia Yia's (for some beer) and Mary's Place for tacos with Jodi and Kimberly.

Then, Brian headed off to poker with his friends and I went to visit the VanBoenings and check out their new house.

It was an all-around wonderful first day of summer. :)

And now, I am headed to work and jealous that Brian gets to keep sleeping. :(

We spent last Saturday afternoon with my grandparents and Aunt Jean and Uncle Mike. Mike and Brian did a lot of furniture moving. Grandma wanted this cabinet dropped off at the Salvation Army. Since she also wanted to ride along, Brian was the lucky guy that got to ride in the back of the truck. :)

We love all of the time we have been spending outdoors in the past few weeks - and so does Mabel.

In the past few weeks, we have put edging and new mulch around the flowers that border the house and started a garden. We have also been working on the never-ending project of filling in the dead patches of grass that seem to pop up in places where *someone* likes to pee.

We have made a lot of meals on the grill and even spent a few warm mornings just sitting out on the deck reading the newspaper/cross stitching.

Summer is wonderful!

P.S. Doesn't Mabe look funny in that top photo. I think she looks kind of stuck up or maybe like she thinks she is very regal.
